Chicago P.D. Season 12: Everything We Know
Even though Hailey Upton is no longer a member of the Intelligence unit, Chicago Police Department has a lot to celebrate when season 12 arrives.
In the eleventh season of the show, viewers were finally able to witness Kim Burgess (played by Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (played by Patrick Flueger) become engaged and remain in that relationship. During the course of their years-long relationship, the couple famously became engaged and then broke up twice before Burgess finally said "yes" for the third time.
LaRoyce Hawkins, who plays Burgess and Ruzek's best friend Kevin Atwater, revealed in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly that he would be delighted to marry them in a television ceremony. This came before the proposal.
“This is something a lot of people don’t know about me … The revelation was made by Hawkins in June of 2023. "I am certified to marry people." As someone who considers Burgess and Ruzek to be members of the same family, I believe that Atwater ought to be granted the opportunity to refuse to actually marry them. This is exactly what we want to see.
While a wedding might be in the cards for season 12, it is uncertain whether Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) will make the ceremony given she quit the program at the season 11 finale. In either case, there is a great deal of information to sort out before the program returns in the autumn.

What Happened At The Conclusion Of Season 11?
Detective Hank Voight, played by Jason Beghe, was kept prisoner by serial murderer Frank Matson, played by Dennis Flanagan, during the season 11 finale, which was shown in May. In line with his custom, the killer sought to get Voight to phone someone he loved to try and save them. Voight didn’t take the bait, because he knew if he phoned Upton, who is like a daughter to him, Matson would murder her, too. Ultimately, Upton did come to Voight’s rescue and the two fought together for his freedom and saved his life.
No More Hailey Upton in the Windy City
After protecting Voight from danger, Upton decided that it was time for a change. In the last minutes of the season 11 finale, she hopped in a cab and went for the airport but didn’t divulge her destination or what job she took outside Chicago.
News came in October 2023 that season 11 would be Spiridakos’ last. After joining the group in 2017, the actress bid farewell to P.D. this spring — but didn’t rule out a return. She told Variety in May that “it would be a dream” to repeat the role in the future.
Will There Be a Burzek Wedding?
Showrunner Gwen Sigan suggested in May that she is “very excited to get into it” when discussing about Burgess and Ruzek’s future moves. The pair got engaged during season 11 for a third time and it could just be the charm.
“There’s definitely a possibility of, ‘Are we going to do the wedding next year? Are we going to do the planning? What are we going to see?’” Sigan said TVLine, revealing the “when” isn’t fixed in stone.
The EP stated that Burgess and Ruzek’s position as parents to Makayla could impact what they do for their special day. “I also think about Makayla and that she’s going to be a part of all those conversations and wanting to be a part of [the ceremony],” Sigan added. “And Ruzek has this big family and all these friends. … Is he going to want to do the full thing? You could see them go either way. There’s probably a decent middle ground there.” You may also read this: After Richard Simmons's Passing, Jane Fonda Expresses Her Sorrow
There’s a New Detective in Town
Us revealed in August that Toya Turner was cast as police officer Kiana Cook following Hailey’s resignation from the Intelligence Unit. Kiana is someone who “loves the adrenaline of the job and its stakes and doesn’t blink in the face of chaos,” according to TVLine.
When Does Season 12 Begin?
Chicago P.D. returns to NBC on Wednesday, September 25, at 10 p.m. ET.
